Quick thing before we dive in, if you’re an adult thinking about learning chess (or picking it back up), this one’s for you. We want to share a pretty awesome story that might just give you the nudge you need. So… A while ago, We had a fun conversation with Pramod Rao — former VP at Zomato, now founder of Threado: he started learning chess seriously in his 40s. Not as a casual game once in a while. Not just for his kids. He wanted to actually get better. Build a new skill. Compete. Learn. Improve. And it’s been amazing to watch.
Why chess, and why now?Pramod always knew about chess. Like most of us, he had a board at home growing up. But it wasn’t until recently, after a career shift and some deep self-reflection, that he decided to dive in. He told us he wanted something mentally challenging but sustainable over the long term, something that didn’t need him to be in peak physical shape to keep enjoying into his 50s and 60s. Enter: chess ♟️
Learning chess as an adult hits different
There are some quirks, for sure. Adults don’t absorb new patterns like kids. You’ve got to consciously re-learn creativity, take risks, and stay patient with progress. But the flip side? ✅ Focus ✅ Discipline ✅ Strategic mindset
Pramod practices an hour a day, plays daily, and trains a few hours a week with a coach. What really clicked was that structured + playful balance.
| |
He said the game actually made him better at business. No joke. Chess taught him to make decisions with limited info, under pressure — exactly what he faces as a founder. His real-life decision-making got sharper. More confident. More calculated.
Want to hear it from him?

We recorded a casual chat where Pramod and GM Priyadharshan talk through all of this — from adult learning challenges to game analysis, and how chess helps in startups and life. It’s super relatable, especially if you’ve ever thought: “Am I too old to start something new?” Short answer: Nope.
